About us
Jon and Cindy
Elsasser bought this building in late 2020 and spent most of 2021 remodeling it to the two-unit guesthouse that you experience today. The structure is in Historic Zoar Village on the site of one of the original barns of the Society of Separatists of Zoar and next to the remaining foundation of the main dairy barn of the community. The large earthen mound to the side and rear of the Gästehaus is the Zoar Levee, built by the US Army Corps of Engineers in the 1930’s to protect Zoar from periodic flooding of the Tuscarawas River.
The Gästehaus zum Stern (Zoar Star Guesthouse in German)
is named after the seven-pointed star that was the emblem of the German founders of Zoar. The star was worn by their members while still in their native Kingdom of Wuerttemberg (current German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg) as an identification of their membership in the community and as a sign of protest to authorities. Today you can see the star on the ceiling of the main stairway in the Number One house on Main Street in the Zoar Village Historic Site.
You can rent the entire Gästehaus
with two bedrooms, three bathrooms and a kitchen or just one of its two units.
